In the shadow of a giant by PenUser In the shadow of a giant by PenUser
Done and done.

I inked and colored this one... ended up a lot darker and lot less colorful than I thought to be honest. I just wanted to get the shadow to show up as a dark and oppressing as possible, and to get the scale done well. I suppose it was successful, kinda. Ah, I'd really want to see what an actual colorist could do with the lineart...

Quoting myself from the sketch version, some background on this: "So, I decided to draw big buildings in a planning spree I had for the next scene in Requiem, which is at a massive centre of government and bureucracy on Earth, the Green tower of CGA. It is called so for the green tint of the outer shell, as it is a combination of a farming tower, living areas, shops and government functions- although at this scale it would be best described as a vertical city. In this picture its base(or parts of it) can be seen on the upper part of the picture... so, it's HUGE. Not much of it is seen actually, so the main focus is on one of the "small" office blocks littering the base of the five tower-complex. Around it can be seen highways and smaller buildings, parks and such. The irregularily shaped buildings are farming towers which produce food for the surrounding areas. I wanted them to have an "organic" look to them, hence the shape... I'm pretty satisfied with it. :) (Smile) The plane on the foreground is a small VIP shuttle that also features in the story, though just as a background object."

Original A3, inked with 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 markers, PS CS3 + tablet for colors.

Right, off to draw something else. Sketches maybe.

Thanks, details are my forte(I think), so I'm glad you like them- although I forgot to add the vehicles on the roads down there... ^^;

Very Mobeius-esque, the fine details and the use of shade to color the scene.

This is truly a great effort. I'm left breathless however which way I view it. When I zoom in I spend lots of time scrolling around, enjoying the nice details and when I zoom out, the whole picture is just so emotionally engaging, thanks to the excellent lighting and shadows. I'm taken by the design of the buildings - which feature ample 'empty' zones. It's very easy to the eyes. I love the subtle gradient mist highlighted by the sun felt throughout the scene. And the colors are just so right. You're really talented! Great work!

I like how the sides of the buildings are really smooth but the tops are really detailed! Looks great!

I thought it would be the best look since I didn't want the pic to look too stuffed with detail.

Thanks!

I like it also, but I find the blue fire of the plane is very intensive - maybe a bit too much.

You might be right... originally the pic had a warmer filter color on it, but I decided it would be nice to have at least some color there(like the plane exhaust) so I changed it to a colder filter. It works for the other parts, I think.

Thanks! :)

Yes, or something similar. I tried to include reflections to the big one, but got tired of trying to get them look right... I may add them later.

Thanks! :)

Aye this looks beatuiful. Did you think about adding traffic/city lights?

Thanks! :)

Yep, I thought about both, but for the city lights I decided it would make the picture a bit confusing since I so clearly divided the city so clearly to light and shadow. I also meant that the light is daytime light, or at least morning, so the lights in the apartments and so on would be a bit weird and unnecessary. It's mostly a stylistic choice, though I thought about making the pic depicting the scene at nighttime but concluded that it would have been too much work and the nice focus on the shuttle would have been ruined. :/ Plus the title of the piece wouldn't have made any sense then...

As for the traffic... I just forgot. I was thinking on adding some little specs on the road as vehicles, but it just passed my mind. I'll update the pic later today to add them, got stuff to do first.

Is it digital, and how do you get those straight lines?

The color is digital, lineart is traditional markers. Mixed media work.

Thanks! :)
