Hi!

I had mentioned before at some points that I'd like to scan my sketches to show here... well, it took a while but here they are! Or at least a part of them. These ones don't relate to any project specifically, excect the last two(Hellbound character), and were mainly done for fun. A bunch of random cyborg- ideas. I still have piles of sketches on various topics(Requiem, scifi-enviroments, etc.), so I thought I'd make a few of these sketch-compilations.

Enjoy! :)

Cool designs. Nice mix of both sleek, organic elements and bulky, mechanical ones.

Great grasp on body anatomy. However your faces don't follow up in my opinion.

Indeed. I have problems with the faces looking too emotionless, stiff or just a bit... unnatural(?) if you can say that. Especially when depicting vivid and strong emotions. I'm trying to improve on that regard, but progress is slow... I must study more live drawings and models. If you have any more pointers as to how or why exactly they look a bit crappy, I'd very much appreciate the knowledge. :)

Thanks!

First, your faces are generally way back in terms of everything compared to rest of the body and even the landscapes and concepts/designs. I suggest working on eyes more. You lack some major shadows and most of the faces are not symmetric. They really look rushed.

Variety - explore more eyes and explore more values and shadows on the faces. Reduce the linework and increase surfaces.

Size - From the side, most of the faces look ok but as soon as you turn them to front, you enlarge eyes and ruin the character. Most of the people look deformed. Now that I analyze more, I see that you enlarge all faces parts (but eyes the most) as soon as you turn them front. Reduce mouths, noses, brows and eyes and leave some space for some face complexions.

Well, I hadn't noticed the enlargement myself at all! Oh my. That's good to know though... some of the faults in facial anatomy are(I think) at least partially due to the style in which I draw comics... there are really not much values unless there is just straight up black shadow, otherwise the values/shadows get added at the coloring phase. Haven't been getting much practice in doing that by pencil- although some commissions I have drawn with a model picture, namely these(some values, though not much):

In terms of being rushed, all of the faces here are to a degree, again this has to do with comics(mass-production and all that).

Indeed, the faces would look better and more "realistic" or natural(would believable be the right word perhaps?) with reduced features... I'll have to practice this on a batch of sketches, see how it goes. I imagine that correcting this problem will take some time, just to adjust my way of drawing to the correct proportions.

Thanks man.

No problemo. If you're gonna stylize the faces, then do the same with the rest bodies. Mixing up styles rarely works together.
